Karl Heinrich Marx (May 5, 1818, Trier, Germany – March 14, 1883, London, England) was an immensely influential German philosopher, political economist, and socialist revolutionary. While Marx addressed a wide range of issues, he is most famous for his analysis of history in terms of class struggles, summed up in the opening line of the introduction to the Communist Manifesto: "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles."

At the same time as Engels, Marx took part in the political and philosophical struggle of his times, writing the Communist Manifesto a year before the Revolutions of 1848, although the two events had nothing to do with each other. Marx had broken with his university environment, German Idealism and the Young Hegelians, and took part in the debates of the European workers' movement, in particular in relation with the First International founded in 1864. He published the first tome of Das Kapital in 1867, a few years before the 1871 Paris Commune. The influence of his ideas, already popular during his life, was given added impetus by the victory of the Russian Bolsheviks in the 1917 October Revolution, and there are few parts of the world which were not significantly touched by Marxian ideas in the course of the twentieth century. The relation of Marx's own thought to the popular "Marxist" interpretations of it during this period is a point of controversy; he himself once said that "the only thing I know is that I'm not a Marxist"(In response to the views of a French Social-Democratic Party). While Marx's ideas have declined in popularity, particularly with the decline of Marxism in Russia, they are still very influential today, both in academic circles, some worker movements, and in political practice, and Marxism continues to be the official ideology of some Communist states and political movements.

Karl Heinrich Marx(5. maj, 1818, Trier, Nemčija – 14.marec, 1883, London, Anglija) je bil zelo vpliven nemški filozof, politični ekonomist in socialistični revolucionar. Marx se je ukvarjal s celo vrsto problemov, najbolj pa je znan po analizi zgodovine z vidika boja družbenih razredov, zgoščeni v začetni povedi uvoda v Komunističnemu Manifestu:''Zgodovina doslej obstoječe družbe je zgodovina razrednih bojev.''

V istem času kot Engels je Marx sodeloval v političnem in filozofskem konfliktu njegovega časa, napisal je Komunistični Manifest eno leto pred revolucijo l. 1848, čeprav ta dva dogodka nista bila povezana. Marx je prekinil odnose z univerzitetnim okoljem, Nemškim Idealizmom in Mladimi Hegeljanci in se vključil v debate o evropskem delavskem gibanju, posebej v zvezi z Prvo Internacionalo, ustanovljeno 1864. L. 1867 je objavil prvi zvezek Kapitala, nekaj let pred Pariško Komuno l.1871. Vplivu njegovih idej, popularnih že za njegovega življenja, je bila dodana gonilna sila zmag Ruskih Bolševikov v Oktobrski Revoluciji leta 1917. Le malo delov sveta ni bilo pomembno dotaknjenih z marksističnimi idejami v dvajsetem stoletju. Povezava med Marxovimi lastnimi mislimi z popularno ''marksistično'' razlago je sporna. Marx sam je nekoč rekel:''Edino kar vem, je da nisem Marksist.''(v odgovor na poglede Francoske Socialno-Demokratske stranke).Medtem ko popularnost Marxovih idej pada, predvsem v Rusiji, so še vedno zelo pomembne, v akademskih krogih, pa tudi v delavskih gibanjih in v politični praksi. Marksizem ostaja uradna ideologija v nekaterih komunističnih državah in političnih gibanjih.
